Why I Love a Travel Capsule Wardrobe in Winter
Dragging a heavy suitcase over cobblestone streets is not my idea of a good time. Those adorable European lanes? Perfect for strolls. Terrible for roller bags. And checking luggage means waiting at the carousel while everyone else snags the taxis. Nope.
A winter travel capsule wardrobe keeps your bag light and your outfits effortless. Everything goes together, so you never stand in a hotel room trying to make outfits happen at 10 p.m. on vacation. And if you must check a bag, at least toss an AirTag in there. Worth it.

What to Pack for a Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe
Here’s all you need to create at least 16 mix-and-match outfits:
- 1 dress
- 5 tops
- 3 toppers
- 3 bottoms
- 2-3 shoes
- 2 bags
- Accessories
DRESS: black floral
TOPS: black velvet + white long collar + long red T + black T + long stripe T
TOPPERS: red cardi + stripe sweater + black blazer
BOTTOMS: black velvet + dark jean + light jean
SHOES: short black boots + tall black boots + red flats (similar)
BAGS: small black + tan medium
ACCESSORIES: red hat + brown coat
Let’s break down how to build your own winter travel capsule wardrobe step by step.
Step 1: Pick Your Patterns
Your One Dress
I like having one winter-friendly dress for dinners or afternoon tea. Layer it with a sweater, blazer, or jacket and add fleece tights or leggings under tall boots. Cozy, cute, and practical.
For this capsule, I picked a black floral dress with red and green accents. The red became my accent color for the entire wardrobe. You can choose green, blue, or anything you love. The point is to pick one color and build around it.
A satin slip dress is also a good “just in case” option because it packs tiny, doesn’t wrinkle, and can be styled a hundred ways.
One Patterned Top
Stripes are a winter classic. I chose a ribbed black-and-white striped top with a funnel neck that’s warm and easy to layer.
One Patterned Topper
A striped sweater adds texture without overwhelming your outfit. You can layer it under a blazer, over a tee, or wear it solo.
Step 2: Choose Your Solids
Here’s where your winter travel capsule wardrobe comes to life. Solids keep everything versatile and simple.
Four Solid Tops
Make sure all your tops layer under every cardigan, sweater, and blazer.
• Black velvet top: Sleeveless, elegant, and great for layering
• White knit top: A goes-with-everything staple
• Red top: The color pop for this capsule
• Black tee: Perfect for warm museums or anyone dealing with hot flashes (hi, yes, me)
Two Solid Toppers
• Red cardigan: Wear it buttoned like a top or open as a layer
• Black blazer: Polished and warm, especially in wool
Three Solid Bottoms
I kept it simple with
- Velvet pants: they match the velvet top but also work alone
- Dark jeans: I always think of dark jeans as being just a little dressed up
- Light jeans: They look good with anything
And if you love warmth, don’t sleep on corduroy. It’s cozy, stylish, and packs smaller than you think.

Step 3: Shoes for Cold-Weather Travel
Boot season is peak travel season. Thick socks, warm toes, no blisters.
You only need two pairs of shoes:
• A short boot for everyday exploring
• A tall boot for evenings or extra warmth
If you expect snow, make sure one pair is waterproof. There are lots of cute waterproof boots that don’t look like hiking boots.
A third pair is optional. I packed red flats for dinners out and a bit of color.
Step 4: Accessories That Add Interest
Accessories take zero space but make your outfits look intentional.
Two Bags
• A medium crossbody or hobo for sightseeing
• A small bag for dinner
I also bring a foldable tote for markets, picnics, and spontaneous souvenir shopping.
Cold-Weather Gear
Pick a hat, scarf, and gloves that match your palette. You’ll wear them in almost every photo.
Sunglasses are useful too, since winter sun is surprisingly bright.
The Basics: Underwear, Pajamas, and That Big Coat
Your warm coat won’t go in your suitcase. Wear it on the plane and use it as a blanket when the cabin feels like a meat locker.
For everything else:
• 5 pairs of breathable underwear
• 5 pairs of warm, wicking socks
• 3 bras
• One silky pajama set (You can wear the top under a blazer- I won’t tell!)
These dry quickly, pack small, and keep things simple.
UNDERWEAR: breathable undies
BRAS: breathable bras
SOCKS: wicking socks
PAJAMAS: satin cami top + satin cami shorts
How to Create Outfits
Thanks to the color palette and layering pieces, almost everything works with everything. Mix the dress with any topper, pair all tops with all bottoms, and rotate shoes depending on the day. That’s the beauty of a winter travel capsule wardrobe. It keeps your vacation stylish without effort.
With the example pieces above, you can easily create 16+ outfits.
DRESS: black floral
TOPS: black velvet + white long collar + long red T + black T + long stripe T
TOPPERS: red cardi + stripe sweater + black blazer
BOTTOMS: black velvet + dark jean + light jean
SHOES: short black boots + tall black boots + red flats (similar)
BAGS: small black + tan medium
ACCESSORIES: red hat + brown coat
For Longer Trips (Yes, You Still Pack the Same)
Please do not bring more clothes. Laundry exists, and in Europe it’s even easier. Drop off your clothes, go sightseeing, come back to them freshly folded. A true luxury.
I pack a small packable laundry bag to separate dirty pieces and haul things to a laundromat if needed. You can also rent an apartment with a washing machine for a night or two. Just leave time for air-drying because dryers are rare outside the US.
Undies and socks dry fast, so wash them in the shower every few days.
Sixteen outfits will easily get you through two weeks.

Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe FAQs
Do I need to buy new clothes?
Not at all. Start with what you already own and only fill in gaps. I personally use trips as an excuse to buy one cute new thing, but you do you.
What should I wear on the plane?
Wear your heaviest shoes and your warmest coat. Tuck your gloves and hat into your pockets, wrap your scarf around your neck, and board your flight already cozy.
