Weather in Japan During Autumn

Before you can figure out what to wear during autumn in Japan, you need to understand the weather:

  • September: Still warm and humid, especially in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. Think late-summer vibes with temps between 70–85°F (21–29°C). Typhoon season may bring rain, so waterproof layers matter.
  • October: Gorgeous. Temperatures cool to a pleasant 60–75°F (15–24°C). Crisp mornings, sunny afternoons, perfect for sightseeing.
  • November: Cozy sweater weather. Temps dip to 45–65°F (7–18°C). In northern Japan (like Sapporo or the Japanese Alps), you’ll need heavier jackets.

Autumn Travel Capsule for Japan

If you don’t want to lug around a huge suitcase on your trip (and I promise you don’t), then the key to packing is a capsule wardrobe.

In Japan, people tend to dress simply- think conservative, minimal, sleek.  And since I love to blend in when I visit a place (as much as I can as a blue-eyed blondish-haired person in Asia) I try to do the same.

This capsule that shows you what to wear during autumn in Japan has simple lines, no patterns, and just one bright color- because I had to spice it up a little bit.  Just black, brown, white, and red.  Simple, simple, simple.

Clothes to Pack for Japan

You only need the following to create 16+ outfits:

DRESS: Denim Midi Dress
TOPS: Brown Tank + Black Scuba Tank + White Easy Care Shirt + Soft Red Sweater + Black Merino Sweater + Cream Cardigan
BOTTOMS: Red Crop Ponte Pants + Brown Satin Wide Pants + Straight Jeans
SHOES: White Sneaker + Brown Born Boots + Tan Vionic Loafers
BAGS: Brown Slouchy Tote + Small Silver Bag
ACCESSORIES: Silver Squared Hoops + Retro Sunglasses + Mixed Metal Necklace
JACKET: Quilted Jacket
COLD WEATHER SET: Cashmere Scarf, Hat, and Glove Set

That’s all the clothes you need to pack for Japan- seriously!  This will get you through 2 weeks of travel and fit perfectly in a carry-on.  That is until you buy a bunch of souvenirs and have to check a bag on the way home.  True story.

Dresses to Pack for Japan

The dress I picked is denim- comfy, casual, matches everything, and you can wear it again and again.  Change up the look by layering things of top of it or even underneath- like that thin, black merino sweater.  And the length is perfect for Japan in that it’s long enough to wear in shrines and temples.

Tops and Toppers to Pack for Japan

The brown tank is a comfy material and easy to layer things on top of because there are no bulky sleeves.  It also perfectly matches the brown pants to create a set.  I love a set (see below for the red set).

The black tank is also great for layering and is made of this cool scuba fabric that DOES NOT WRINKLE.  And it’s stretchy!  I have a couple things in this fabric and absolutely love them.  Hint hint- there’s a dress I almost included too.

What can I say about a white button shirt?  You can wear it with the sleeves rolled up, rolled down, open over a tank, tied at the waist of the dress… This one is in an easy care fabric which means it stays wrinkle free even when smushed in the bottom of your suitcase.

I’m in love the color of this red sweater (the same as the pants).  I wanted to pack something red because it just felt right for a trip to Japan.  And this one is soft and comfy.

The black merino sweater is a great, versatile piece.  And merino is great if you’re not sure what the weather will be like.  It’s warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot.  But the best part is that it’s odor-resistant so you can wear it a bunch of times before it stinks.

I always include a cardigan when I travel because, again, I love versatility.  This cream version can be worn over the tanks, sweater, or button shirt.  Or it can be worn on its own as a top.

Bottoms to Pack for Japan

I’m so excited about the red pants.  I just love them (I own them) and want everyone to buy a pair.  They’re high waist so they’re great for travel.  They’re also stretchy and come in petite (me).  Comfy enough for plane travel and cute enough to wear around town.

The brown satin pants are another one of my recent purchases that I adore.  They basically feel like pajama pants.  And who doesn’t want to wear PJs all day long?  Comfy for sightseeing and can be dressed up for dinner.

And, of course, jeans.  My closet is filled with Joe’s Jeans because they make my butt look good and there are cropped versions that are awesome for my 5’1” body.  Let me know if you’re petite like me and you want specific style names.

Other Items to Pack for Japan

Shoes to Pack for Japan

Comfy is the name of the game.  Make sure that whatever you bring, you can walk miles in them.

You’ll also be taking your shoes on and off a lot when you enter buildings so make sure you don’t bring ones that you have to untie and retie every time.

I packed some sneakers because I wanted them for hiking and when my feet started hurting (I’m old!).

These boots are waterproof (did I mention it rains in fall?) and super comfy.  I’ve had my black pair for a million years but now I’m loving this brown color. 🤔💸

I included the loafers because they are super easy to get on and off and are incredibly comfortable.  Can I say comfortable one more time?  Get them!

Bags to Pack for Japan

The brown bag is smaller than a personal item but big enough to hold a water bottle, money, small purchases, and is perfect for daily sightseeing.

The small silver bag is for when you’re heading out at night or any time you don’t want to lug around a bunch of stuff.  It’s always nice to unload a little bit. And you can turn it info a cross-body by pulling the strap on one side to be longer. Boom.

Accessories to Pack for Japan

Accessories are what makes outfits interesting.  Again, Japan is a place where people dress simply so you don’t need to pack anything super crazy.

The necklace has both gold and silver because I’m into mixing it up.  If you want to be a bit more colorful, you can pack a beaded necklace in a pretty color.  I love aqua with red (and black and brown).  Or pack a colored scarf instead.

The earrings are hoops but just a bit different which I love.  You could also pack a headband or fun belt (they make one in the same color red) or whatever to give your outfits a little pizzaz.

The sunglasses go with everything.  Honestly, I almost didn’t put in sunglasses because they are associated with crime (as are tattoos) but I figure they know I’m not part of the Yakuza so I’ll be fine.

Seasonal Items to Pack for Japan

I don’t want you to be cold! Pack a jacket along with a hat, gloves, and scarf to make sure you’re warm enough for those cool, crisp mornings.

Adapting the Travel Capsule

The capsule I created is aimed at travel in October so you might need to adapt it for other months.

If you’re traveling to Japan in September:

  • Swap out the red and black sweaters for T-shirts
  • Bring a lighter cardigan for evenings instead of the heavy cream one
  • Leave the jacket and scarf/gloves/hat at home
  • Bring a small umbrella (rain is common!)

If you’re traveling to Japan in November:

  • Swap the tank tops for long-sleeve T-shirts
  • Bring some fleece-lined tights to wear under the dress
  • Bring a medium-weight coat (pea coat, puffer, or wool blend) instead of the light one

Japan Autumn Outfits

And now to the fun stuff- the outfits!  I love creating these because it’s like playing paper dolls (yes, I’m old).

I created 16 outfits for Japan in autumn but you can absolutely make more than that from these items.  Let me know what else you come up with!

Basics to Pack for Japan

I usually toss in about 6 pairs of undies and 5 pairs of socks (wicking ones are the way to go) and just do a quick wash every few days. Three bras are plenty– unlined ones are my fave since they dry so much faster.

For pajamas, I swear by a silky set because they pack down to nothing and dry in a flash. And, between us, I’ve totally worn the pajama top as a regular shirt. You can too.

Cultural Etiquette & Dressing in Japan

Japan values modesty and neatness. A few tips:

  • Cover shoulders when visiting shrines/temples.
  • Avoid super low-cut tops or overly flashy clothes.
  • Slip-on shoes are handy since you’ll remove them often (temples, ryokans, some restaurants).

Hotels Worth Packing For

Here are some hotel suggestions where the vibe might influence your wardrobe:

  • Tokyo: Park Hotel Tokyo – artistic, chic, and central. Perfect excuse for stylish city outfits.
  • Kyoto: Hotel Kanra Kyoto – a modern ryokan vibe, so pack cozy layers for evenings.
  • Hakone: Gora Kadan – luxury ryokan with onsen. Bring minimal clothes—you’ll live in your yukata.
  • Sapporo (November trips): JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo – sleek and warm, but bring heavier coats for snowy outings.

Activities Perfect for Autumn in Japan

🍂 Leaf Peeping: Kyoto’s Kiyomizu-dera or Nikko’s shrines are jaw-dropping in fall colors. Wear layers for crisp mornings and sunny afternoons.

🍜 Food Festivals: Autumn is foodie heaven. Seasonal specialties like matsutake mushrooms, roasted sweet potatoes, and chestnuts fill markets. Bring comfy pants– you’ll want to eat everything.

🚶 Hiking: Japan’s autumn trails (Mount Kurama near Kyoto, Mount Takao near Tokyo) are stunning. Sneakers or light hiking boots recommended.

🏯 Cultural Sightseeing: Castles like Himeji look amazing framed by autumn leaves. Dress modestly for temples and shrines.

🛁 Onsen Soaks: The ultimate autumn activity (especially in Kinosaki). Bring hair ties and easy-to-remove clothes (since you’ll be undressing before bathing).

Longer Trips to Japan

Sixteen outfits will easily get you through a couple of weeks before you even have to think about laundry. I usually wear each top or dress twice before it feels truly dirty, and jeans? Those pretty much last forever.

Don’t stress about laundry while traveling. Lots of hotels have coin-operated machines– be sure you pack a laundry bag to make it easy.

Another option? Book an apartment with a washer and dryer for a few days after you’ve been on the road a while. It’s the perfect reset to get everything fresh again.

Questions about What to Wear During Autumn in Japan

Do I need to buy all new clothes for a travel capsule?

Nope, not at all! This is just an example to give you some inspiration and make planning a little easier. You can totally shop your own closet and find almost everything you need. That said…I do use packing as an excuse to treat myself to something new. And hey, no judgment if you do the same!

What do I wear on the plane?

You should wear your largest, heaviest shoes and your jacket on the plane to save room in your luggage.  You can also stuff your gloves and hat into the pockets and wrap the scarf around your neck. And be sure to wear your comfiest pants (the red ones!) for that long flight!

Wearing your biggest shoes and jackets for flights is so helpful, especially in the colder months, since they otherwise take up so much precious space.

It makes such a difference. And that coat makes for an excellent blanket or pillow in flight.
