Sometimes you want to travel, but all you actually have is one free evening, a cozy blanket, and enough energy to pour a glass of wine.
That is where armchair travel comes in.
If you have never heard the term before, armchair travel is exactly what it sounds like: experiencing the feeling of travel without actually getting on a plane. It is travel through books, movies, food, music, rituals, and little experiences that make you feel connected to another place from home.
And honestly, I love it.
Obviously, I adore actual travel. I love wandering pretty streets, finding the best pastries, getting a little lost, and figuring out what locals order for dinner. But real trips are not always possible. Budgets, schedules, work, family life, and plain old exhaustion all get a in the way.
Armchair travel is how you keep the spirit of travel alive between trips.
It is also just a lovely way to make everyday life feel less ordinary. A little richer. A little more romantic. A little more connected to the wider world.
So, if you are craving a cozy escape, here are 15 armchair travel ideas that actually make home feel more exciting.

What is Armchair Travel?
Armchair travel is the experience of exploring a place from home through stories, food, culture, music, and atmosphere.
It might mean reading a novel set in Japan, cooking pasta while listening to Italian music, watching a movie set in Paris, or putting together a themed evening around a place you want to visit someday.
The best armchair travel ideas are not about mindlessly scrolling travel photos and feeling jealous of someone else’s trip. They are about creating an experience for yourself.
That is what makes it fun.

Why Armchair Travel is Worth Trying
One of the things I love most about armchair travel is that it gives you a little escape without the stress.
No airport security. No packing. No jet lag. No panic over whether you booked the right train. Just the beauty, curiosity, and atmosphere.
It is also a really great way to:
- keep the spirit of travel alive between trips
- explore places you are curious about
- make everyday life feel richer
- get inspired for future travels
- enjoy books, movies, and food in a more immersive way
And if you are someone who loves slower, more meaningful travel, armchair travel fits right into that mindset.
1. Read a novel set somewhere you want to visit
This is probably the easiest armchair travel idea of all, and it is one of the best.
A good novel can give you the mood of a place in a way a guidebook never could. You start to notice the atmosphere, the details, the rhythm of daily life, the food, the streets, the weather, and the emotional feel of a destination.
If you want to armchair travel to Italy, read a novel set in Florence, Rome, or the Amalfi Coast. If you are dreaming of Japan, pick up a book set in Kyoto or Tokyo. If Spain is calling your name, choose something set in Madrid, Barcelona, or Andalucía.
Pick up a romance, drama, or thriller. Or give historical fiction a try—it’s a great way to learn the history of a place without it feeling like a lesson. Any novel can all give you the feeling of being in a different place while you’re between its pages.
You do not need a huge reading list. One good book can do it.
📙 A Kindle makes it easy to own a bunch of books without them taking over your entire house (and fits easily in a bag to take with you).

2. Watch a movie or show set in one destination
Pick one destination and build a whole evening around it.
This works especially well for armchair travel because movies are so good at creating atmosphere. You notice the architecture, the colors, the clothing, the meals, the pacing, and the tiny cultural details in the background.
Instead of just watching whatever sounds good, choose something that helps you “go” somewhere.
A few easy ideas:
- a cozy British countryside movie
- a romantic Italian film night
- a Japanese drama like Rental Family
- stream a Spanish show
This feels even more fun if you lean into the theme a little.
3. Make a meal from another country
Food might be the fastest way to make armchair travel feel real.
You do not need to make anything complicated. In fact, this is better when it feels fun, not stressful. Choose one dish from another country and build dinner around it.
That could mean:
- Spanish tortilla or tapas
- pasta and tiramisu for an Italian night
- Japanese curry, ramen, or oyakodon
- an English tea spread with scones or savory pies
- Albanian-inspired grilled meats, salad, and feta
The point is not culinary perfection. The point is to bring the flavor of a place into your evening.
4. Create a destination-inspired playlist
Music changes the mood of a room so quickly.
If you want a low-effort armchair travel idea, make a playlist inspired by a place you love or want to visit. French café music, Spanish guitar, Italian classics, Japanese jazz, British folk, whatever fits the mood you want.
Then let that music play while you cook, read, clean, journal, or just sit there pretending you are in a little apartment somewhere much prettier than your current view.
Honestly, that still counts.
5. Create a whole armchair travel night
This is one of my favorite ways to do it because it feels intentional.
Choose a place and make a whole night out of it.
For example, you could do:
- a book and playlist
- a movie or TV show
- a yummy cocktail
- an easy meal
- don’t forget dessert
- maybe a table setting that fits the vibe
That is enough to make a random Tuesday feel way more interesting.
An Italy night could be an Aperol spritz or glass of wine, pasta, and some Italian music. A Japan night could be green tea, hot ramen eaten with chopsticks, and a quiet film. An England night could be bangers and mash with a Guiness, and a cozy mystery set in the Cotswolds.
This is immersive armchair travel at its best.
6. Read a memoir from another country
Fiction is great for mood, but memoirs are my favorite way to travel vicariously to another country.
Reading about someone else’s experience in a place can give you a deeper feel for the culture, history, and rhythm of life there. It makes a destination feel more layered and human.
Aside from the OG that got me hooked, Under the Tuscan Sun, one of my favorite stories of moving to a completely different place is Sex Lives of Cannibals (spoiler: no one actually gets eaten). It’s the story of a guy who moves to the Pacific Islands with his girlfriend—I thought it was hilarious.
This is especially good if you want your armchair travel to feel a little deeper than just “pretty places and snacks,” although I fully support pretty places and snacks too.
📗 🎧 On Audible, you can often listen to a memoir in the author’s own voice.
7. Explore regional foods before a future trip
Armchair travel is also a fantastic pre-trip ritual.
If you know where you want to go next, start learning about that destination through food before you ever leave. Look up local dishes, regional specialties, desserts, drinks, and customs around mealtime.
I love to check out Taste Atlas to learn about foods before my trip.
This makes future travel so much more fun because you arrive excited about what you want to try.
And even if the trip is far away, you still get that little hit of anticipation now.
8. Take a virtual museum or landmark tour
This is one of the more classic armchair travel ideas, but it still works.
Many museums, historic sites, and landmarks offer virtual tours or online collections, and this can be a fun way to explore a destination from home.
It’s especially good for art lovers, history lovers, and people who enjoy planning future trips around museums or architecture.
9. Journal about a place you want to visit
This might sound simple, but it is surprisingly effective.
Write about:
- where you want to go
- what draws you there
- what kind of trip you imagine
- what meals you want to eat
- what the trip feels like in your mind
- what transformation you think it will give you
Armchair travel is partly about imagination, and journaling helps make that feel more real.
It is also a nice way to notice what kinds of places you are naturally drawn to, which can help when you are deciding where to travel next.
10. Browse Places on Google Explore
This might sound weird, but I think messing around on Google Explore is so fun and gets me thinking of visiting places I’d never even considered.
Don’t know about Google Explore? It’s the best!
All you to is put in where you’d be flying out from but leave the destination blank. Then choose 1 week in the next 6 months, a weekend in May, or whatever timeframe you want. Then this big, beautiful map pops up and shows all the places you can go and the prices.
It’s the reason I’ve been to Spain so many times. I mean, who could pass up a flight to Madrid for $350? Not me!
I can’t travel as much as I want—but I can dream about all the possibilities. So can you.
11. Build a cozy travel corner
If you love this kind of thing, make yourself a little armchair travel collection.
You could keep:
- a few destination-inspired novels
- travel memoirs
- cookbooks
- delish snacks
- travel guidebooks
- a journal
- a cozy blanket
Then when you want a little escape, you already have everything ready.
I have all my Eyewitness Travel Guides piled up in my living room and love to leaf through them when I have free time and think about all the places I could go.
A travel corner isn’t necessary, obviously, but it is fun if you enjoy making things feel special.
12. Watch a Travel Show
This is maybe the most on-the-nose suggestion on the list but it’s a goodie.
He unfortunately passed away, but I still love watching old episodes of Anthony Bourdain because he mixed my two favorite things about travel—culture and food.
Rick Steves has been around absolutely for forever also, showing us around Europe and giving us the inside scoop on each country.
Some more recent additions include:
- Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy– who doesn’t love him?
- Eva Longoria: Searching for Spain– she also has one in Mexico and France
- Race Across the World– a competition that takes you places
- Booze Traveler– for cocktails around the world
- Europe’s Greatest Train Journeys– my favorite way to travel!
Settle into that armchair or sofa and learn about the world. Preferably with snacks.
13. Start a travel-inspired book or movie club
If you have friends who love this kind of thing too, make it social.
Choose a destination each month and base your book club or movie night around it. Add a snack or meal if you want. It does not have to be formal. It just has to be fun enough that people actually want to do it again.

14. Plan a future trip just for fun
This absolutely counts as armchair travel.
You do not have to be ready to book anything. You do not need a final budget or a perfect itinerary. Sometimes the fun is just in imagining it.
Pick a destination. Look at neighborhoods. Save restaurants. Find a boutique hotel you love. Figure out what books you would pack. Decide what you would eat while you’re there.
This kind of travel dreaming is genuinely enjoyable, and it keeps that sense of curiosity alive.
15. Listen to a travel podcast
Kind of like watching a travel show—but for your ears. I try to be healthy and exercise every day (which I hate) and listening to a podcast absolutely helps the time pass faster.
Not only does it get you dreaming of fun places to go, it also usually teaches you a little bit of something about the place.
Find a funny one, a quirky one, or one focused on food (yum).
