Guide to Shkodër: What to Do in this Fabulous Artsy City

what to do in shkodër a man rides a bike in front of shkoder city hall

When I first planned my trip through northern Albania, Shkodër was just a necessary stopover on my way to Theth. I figured I’d spend a quick night there before heading into the mountains. But within a few hours of arriving, I realized this city had way more going for it than I expected.

Shkodër took me by surprise.

Set near the Montenegro border and nestled between mountains, rivers, and the shores of Lake Shkodër, it feels like a casual mix of old-world charm and modern, artsy energy. There’s something about it that’s hard to put into words.  Shkodër is laid-back but vibrant and I absolutely loved it.

If you’re headed to northern Albania and wondering what to do in Shkodër, I have plenty of ideas below.  My advice- don’t treat Shkodër like a throwaway night. Give it a little time, and it might just win you over too.

⭐️ My Top Picks in Shköder:

What to Do in Shkodër

Shkodër is about 1½ hours north of Tirana and is the gateway to the mountains of northern Albania- but it’s a destination of its own as well.  It’s a city that feels like a town.

Shkodër city center is where you’ll spend most of your time but there are also some things to do that are out of the main part of town.  I’ll show you all the options of what to do in Shkodër below.

Pedestrian Street (Rruga Kolë Idromeno)

The best part of Shkodër is the pedestrian street (Rruga Kolë Idromeno) that spans 750 meters (½ mile) and ends at the city hall.  It’s lined with cafés and is the heart of Shkodër city center.

Take your time and stroll the pretty tree-lined streets, people watch, and get a feel for this town.  There are also several offshoots so turn onto anywhere that looks interesting and wander.

Then find a spot at a nice table and try some of that amazing Albanian food.  Have the traditional dish of Tavë Kosi (lamb casserole) or maybe some fresh fish caught in nearby Lake Shkodër.  Or just grab and Aperol Spritz and enjoy the energy of the place.

🍽️ Hey, want to try alllll the traditional Albanian foods?  Try a local food walking tour that will take you to all the best places.

Marubi National Museum of Photography

You might miss this little museum located on the pedestrian street because there’s so much else to look at there.  But step inside Marubi National Museum of Photography and you’ll find not just beautiful photos, but an overview of the history of Shkodër including communist times.

This museum is a must for anyone interested in historical photography- or just wanting to learn a little more about the town and is one of the top things to do in Shkodër.

Mosques in Shkodër

I think visiting a religious site gives so much insight into the local community so I always look for a church, mosque, or temple to visit.  This town has plenty.

The main mosque is Ebu Bekr Mosque and is located on the pedestrian street.  You can’t miss it.  It’s the center of the city.  You’ll hear the call to prayer from here several times a day.

🕌 Never visited a mosque before?  You can visit even if you’re not Muslim but be respectful and don’t go during a service.  Also, be sure you have your shoulders and knees covered and women cover their heads with a scarf.

There are separate entrances and areas of worship for men and women so ask if you’re not sure which door to use (or just follow someone).  And be sure to remove your shoes before you enter.

yellow and blue tile exterior parruces mosque shkoder

The smaller, and in my opinion prettier, mosque is Xhamia e Parruces down near the town hall.  I love the tilework which it reminds me of mosques I’ve visited in Turkey.

Street Art in Shkoder

Shkodër has some amazing street art scattered around town, and it adds to the city’s already artsy vibe. You’ll spot everything from colorful murals to quirky little pieces on side streets and old buildings.

Pay attention as you wander around—you never know what masterpiece you’ll find tucked around the next corner. Once I realized how much there was, trying to spot cool art was one of my favorite things to do I Shkodër.

Churches in Shkodër

If you’d like to check out some churches in Shkodër, you can visit the very large and peaceful Shkodër Cathedral.  Be sure to look into the souvenir shop and visit the small museum in the back.

The Holy Church Nativity of Christ is also worth taking a look at with its gorgeous yellow exterior.  You can sometimes visit the interior of this orthodox church but it was closed when I was there.

Site of Witness and Memory Museum

If you are interested in knowing more about communism in Albania, you should be sure to spend some time at the Site of Witness and Memory.

This small museum sheds light on the suffering and deaths caused to Albanians by their fellow countrymen. It’s a sad and enlightening experience that includes the actual jail where prisoners were held.

Shkodër History Museum

Located in a traditional Ottoman house, the Shkodër History Museum is full of treasures.  On the ground floor, you’ll find all sorts of archeological items like stone tablets, sculptures, and pottery.

Upstairs, there is clothing and traditional furnishings along with old photographs and paintings.

shkoder history museum entrance

It wasn’t the most extensive ethnographic museum I visited in Albania, but I was the only one there so I asked a million questions.  And after a saw everything, I ended up just sitting with the museum guy for a while chatting about life and getting a real feel for what it’s like to live here.

Farmers Market

This is not a tourist destination (as far as I know) but I love to stroll around in the places where the locals are.  When I did, I happened upon this open air farmers market and had a great time “chatting” (using charades) with the local sellers.

The man chopping up fish with a cleaver tried to make me hold an eel, a woman told me the name of each of the fruits and vegetables she was selling (lots were in Italian), and another man talked to me a little bit about how he liked photography too then gave me some of the tiny green fruits I was taking photos of.

I just love these kinds of interactions.  It’s the reason I travel and I’m always seeking out ways to connect with the people whose town I’m visiting.  And I have found Albania to be extremely welcoming- especially once you get out of the main tourist areas.

Rozafa Castle (Kështjella e Rozafës)

Located an hour walk or 15 minute drive from Shkodër city center, the Rozafa Castle (Kështjella e Rozafës) is an absolute must-see in Shkodër.

rozafa castle from below

The earliest fortifications found at the site are from the 3rd century B.C. (whoa) but the current ruins are mostly from the 13th century when it was a Venetian stronghold.

🥾 These old cobblestones are slippery and there is a big hill you have to climb so make sure to wear shoes with good tread!

Legend has it that three brothers were trying to build the castle but it kept collapsing so they decided they needed to sacrifice someone by putting them in the walls to appease the gods and keep them standing.  Instead of one of them sacrificing themselves, they decided to sacrifice one of their wives- her name was Rozafa.

The castle itself is in ruins but it’s still interesting to ramble among them and imagine what life would have been like back then.  There’s also a small museum you can visit for an additional fee.

But the real beauty of this place is the view out over rivers, lakes, and mountains.  It really can’t be beat.

Buna Bridge

The place my waiter told me was his absolute favorite place in the city is Buna Bridge.  He said morning is the best time- you’ll have it all to yourself and it’s not hot yet.

Buna Bridge is a wood bridge for pedestrian and bikes only and has incredible views of the castle and the river as it slips past under you.  Enjoy a stroll or bike ride across.  It’s near  Rozafa Castle is you want to combine the two.

Lake Shkodër

I ran out of time (bummer) but Lake Shkodër is beautiful- even from afar.  You can rent a bike and follow the paths that wind around it.  Or just plop yourself down and enjoy a leisurely day at the beach.

🚲 Find some of the bike routes near Lake Shkodër here.

Mesi Bridge

It’s a 20 minute drive to Mesi Bridge.  This arched Ottoman-era stone bridge is a popular place for swimming. Rent a bike and head out that way with a picnic to enjoy a couple hours of lounging and swimming.

If you’re traveling solo, booking a tour is a great way to meet other travelers. 👋

Other Places to Visit in Northern Albania

Shkodër is more than a destination—it’s a jumping-off point. Many travelers stop here before heading into the Albanian Alps. Whether you’re catching the Koman ferry, arranging a ride into the mountains, or just figuring out your gear, Shkodër is where the planning magic happens.

🚗 Want your own wheels? Book a rental car for your trip here.

Theth

About 2 hours northeast of Shkodër is the breathtaking village of Theth.  There you’ll find lots of opportunities to go hiking to places like Grunas Waterfall and the Theth Blue Eye.  In my opinion, any trip to northern Albania absolutely MUST include Theth.

Kruje

Kruje can be found about 1½ hours south of Shkodër.  It’s a great alternative to staying in the city of Tirana before your flight home since it’s only about 40 minutes from the airport.  It’s also just worth a visit for its wonderful bazaar, castle, and mountain views at sunset.

Komani Lake

If you’re dreaming of a lake day in northern Albania, you’ve got to check out beautiful Komani Lake which is located less than 2 hours east of Shkodër.  One of the best ways to experience it is by taking the ferry that runs between Komani and Fierza which takes a few hours, winding through dramatic mountain scenery that feels straight out of a movie. You can ride with or without a car if you’re going the DIY, or take a guided boat tour instead- it’s beautiful either way.

Shala River (Lumi i Shalës)

Another great way to enjoy northern Albania is by spending a day at the Shala River (Lumi i Shalës)– a stunning, crystal-clear river that empties into Komani Lake.  It’s surrounded by dramatic cliffs and dotted with white pebble beaches. If you didn’t know better, you’d think you were lounging on one of the Albanian Riviera’s beaches instead of sitting beside a mountain river.

Hotels in Shkodër

I stayed in the historic Shkodër city center and it was wonderful.  I was walking distance to almost everything and I loved the energy and vibe of the area.

It’s surrounded by restaurants and activities so you’ll never be at a loss of things to do.  The only thing I would mention is that there is some loud music on the weekends near the hostels, so if you want something quieter, head for the other end of the pedestrian street near city hall.

Here are some hotels in Shkodër that I recommend.

InTown Guesthouse Shkodër
I stayed in this lovely 200 year old guesthouse run by a wonderful couple who did absolutely everything in their power to make sure I had a good visit in Shkodër.  Eating a delicious homemade breakfast in the tranquil courtyard in the morning was a highlight of my time in Shkodër.

Atelier Boutique Hotel
This small hotel is tucked into a side street at the other end of the pedestrian area by city hall so it’s a bit quieter and is really lovely and has a good restaurant attached.

Hotel Loredano
This hotel has a beautiful dining and bar area in a great location with nice rooms at a decent price.

The Wanderers Hostel
This place was always packed with people and looked like tons of fun.  They have a great courtyard.

Restaurants in Shkodër

I love the food in Albania.  It’s a lot like its neighbor, Greece, but with a little different feel.  And Shkodër is known for its café culture which means food is a big deal here.  As a matter of fact, it feels a little like the city is made up of only restaurants. 😋

>>> Lots of the restaurants (and other stores) have little birds outside in cages. Their sweet chirps definitely draw you to the places where their cages are tacked up to the wall.

My favorite thing to do is to get a mixed appetizer plate so I can try it all.  There are lots of veggies, grilled meats, and yummy pastries.  I’m partial to the qofte (grilled meatballs), fergese (cheese and roasted peppers concoction), byrek (flaky phyllo pastry with spinach or something else stuffed inside)- and of course the incredible baklava.

And if Albanian food is not your thing, there are also lots of dishes from Italy (their neighbor across the water) like risotto, pasta, and of course pizza.  🍕

And I picked up a new favorite gelato flavor in Shkodër- almond.  I know it doesn’t sound that good but I promise you it is amaaaazing.

No matter your preferences, you definitely won’t go hungry in Shkodër.

Here are some restaurants in Shkodër that I recommend:

Fisi Restaurant
My hotel guy suggested this place.  Sometimes when I get a recommendation, I wonder if it’s just going to be his brother’s less-than-stellar place, but this was a win. The mixed plate with all sorts of Albanian bites was amazing and the staff was so incredibly nice and friendly.  I’d give this one a big thumbs up.

I actually ended up seeing my waiter around town the next day and we stopped and talked for a bit. He told me all his favorite places to visit in town- his #1 was the Buna Bridge.

Arti Zanave
They also recommended this one for traditional Albanian food.  I didn’t have time to go but another girl from the hotel went and she gave it a big thumbs up.

Muza
If you want to be in the middle of the action, this is a good place to grab a seat for either a drink or dinner.  As a solo diner, it’s nice to be able to entertain myself with people watching as they walk past.  The food was pretty good for being a tourist spot as well.

Mondial
On the other side of the big road, it’s a bit quieter and I enjoyed a quick soup and salad at this place that was good.

Bar Centro Akullore Artizanale
This ice cream shop right across from the Ebu Bekr Mosque is where I got the almond ice cream that I fell in love with.  It’s so fabulous I got it twice in one day. It’s vacation, right?
