Christmas in DC Activities and Events
There is so much to do in DC during the holidays and these are just a drop in the bucket (but some of my favorites). Pick a few for a weekend or do them all on a longer trip. And no matter which you choose, I hope you enjoy this magical season in DC.
🚌 Grab a ticket to the Big Bus DC for the easiest way to hit all the sights. Just hop on and off wherever you want.
Visit the National Christmas Tree
Start your festive adventure at the National Christmas Tree near the White House. It’s one of the most iconic Christmas in DC activities and a must on any December itinerary. The tree is surrounded by smaller trees decorated by students from each state and territory, and the lights make the whole area feel like its own little holiday village.
If you want the ultimate experience, come for the lighting ceremony at the beginning of December.

Explore the US Capitol Christmas Tree
Across the National Mall, the US Capitol Christmas Tree has its own vibe. Each year a different national forest provides the tree, and it’s beautifully decorated with handmade ornaments.
It’s less crowded than the National Christmas Tree, which is a bonus if you prefer a peaceful stroll.

Marvel at Historic Georgetown Houses
You really can’t beat the gorgeous decorations on the historic houses of Georgetown. I especially enjoy the ones surrounding Tudor House or on the cobblestone streets west of Wisconsin on O and P streets.
In early December, the Georgetown Jingle hosts bands to make your Christmas in DC shopping extra festive.

🎄Hey! Want to wander more historic neighborhoods? Try Dupont, Capitol Hill, Kalorama, or Logan Circle– grab a coffee and meander away.
Stroll the CityCenterDC Holiday Tree and Displays
CityCenterDC puts up one of the tallest Christmas trees in the city along with modern, shiny holiday décor. On top of that, you can check out over 40 upscale shops like Chanel and Gucci.
But even if you just come for the decor, it’s a great stop before dinner or a show and the restaurants around the plaza make it easy to turn this into a festive night out.

Experience ZooLights at the National Zoo
ZooLights is one of the most beloved Christmas in DC activities. The National Zoo turns into a glowing wonderland with colorful light installations, live music, and festive snacks.
It’s especially fun for kids, but adults love it too- there’s even a date night with cocktails and no kids.

Go on a weeknight to avoid crowds.
🐼 Hey! If you’re here in October, check out Boo at the Zoo which is tons of fun too!
Shop and Snack at the Downtown Holiday Market
If you want gifts that aren’t boring, the Downtown Holiday Market is the place. You’ll find local artists, small businesses, amazing handmade jewelry, fun prints, baked goods, international snacks, and warm drinks.
More info: Downtown Holiday Market
It’s open daily and easy to visit before or after exploring the National Mall. There is also a smaller market in Dupont as well as events at embassies (the Swedish Embassy has a nice one).
Catch the Christmas Boat Parade on the Waterfront
Head to The Wharf for the annual Holiday Boat Parade, one of the most unique Christmas in DC activities. Decorated boats cruise along the Potomac while you enjoy live music, fire pits, and fireworks.
Bundle up, grab a hot cider, and enjoy the waterfront views.

Enjoy Holiday Shows & Christmas DC Events
DC has no shortage of holiday performances. The Nutcracker is always a classic (the version at the 100-year-old Warner Theatre is my favorite), and the National Cathedral hosts gorgeous Christmas concerts with choirs and brass ensembles.
Ford’s Theatre does a wonderful version of A Christmas Carol. And, of course, the Kennedy Center always has something festive going on this time of year.
🎭 Hey! Check schedules early because these Christmas DC events sell out fast!

Warm Up with a Festive Drink
For a grown-up night out, DC’s holiday pop-up bars are next-level. Miracle at Death Punch Bar and the PUB Dread holiday takeover are usually the splashiest. Expect over-the-top decorations and themed cocktails to get you into the holiday spirit.
Urban Roast and Dirty Habit are right nearby the Downtown Holiday Market and easy to hop into to to warm up and grab a festive drink.
For something a little more upscale, my favorites are the holiday pop-up at The Willard Hotel next to the Holiday Market and Off the Record at the Hay-Adams Hotel.
Grab yourself a drink and soak in the season at one of these bars that are all dressed up for the holidays.
Go Ice Skating at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden
One of the most classic Christmas in DC activities is ice skating at the Sculpture Garden. With the monuments in the background and festive music playing, it feels straight out of a snowy holiday postcard. The rink is small but the location is magical.
Warm up with hot chocolate at the pretty Pavilion Café afterward.

See Model Trains at the US Botanic Garden
The Botanic Garden is overlooked as a tourist destination and is one of my favorite places to send people any time of year. At Christmas, their annual holiday display includes a whimsical model train setup outside– my kids loved it when they were small.
Don’t forget to head inside to warm up for a few minutes and check out the replicas of important DC buildings made entirely of plants.

Visit Mount Vernon by Candlelight
This one is outside the city but worth the short drive. George Washington’s Mount Vernon does candlelight tours in December with carolers, hot cider, and historic reenactments.
Or come for the fireworks and winter market near Christmas. Both are a lovely mix of DC history and holiday charm.

Where to Stay in Washington, DC During Christmas
Here are a few hotels that put you close to the festive action:
- The Tabard Inn – This Dupont gem is super cozy and gorgeous all dressed up for the holidays. I’ve spent many lovely winter evenings at the restaurant.
- Hay-Adams Hotel – If you want to make your trip extra special, this is where you do it. Only hotel guests are allowed on the roof for a one-of-a-kind view of the White House and the bar in the basement, a favorite of mine, is extra cozy in winter.
- Canal House – Wandering around Georgetown at Christmas is absolute magic
- Canopy at the Wharf – Ideal for the boat parade and waterfront events
- The Willard Hotel ⭐️– This luxury hotel next to the Downtown Holiday Market has a pretty Christmas gingerbread display, nightly carolers, and a festive bar.

How to Get Around DC
You don’t need a car here- Metro can get you anywhere you want to go. You can easily Metro from Reagan, but you will need a way from the airport if you’re flying into Dulles or Baltimore (there is Metro from Dulles but it takes forever). Instead of an Uber (which can get crazy expensive), book a taxi in advance.

If you’re lucky, you might catch one of the holiday-wrapped Metro trains or buses to get you around town.

Tips for Enjoying Christmas in DC
• Bundle up. DC winters can be cold, especially at night.
• Book popular activities early. ZooLights, embassy events, and concerts sell out fast.
• Use the Metro. Traffic can be busy during the holidays (actually all the time- it’s the worst).
• Weeknights are your friend. Crowds are smaller almost everywhere. The District clears out after work hours when people head back home to the ‘burbs.
• Wear comfy shoes. You’ll be doing more walking than you think. For reference, the National Mall is two miles long. Yes, really.

Is Washington, DC crowded at Christmas?

Expect chilly days and cold nights. Temperatures usually sit between the mid-30s and mid-40s, and it can be windy near the monuments. Snow isn’t guaranteed but it does happen sometimes. Bring a coat, gloves, and a hat to keep you warm while you sightsee.
Do I need tickets for Christmas DC events?
